Agios Andreas

Άγιος Ανδρέας
Agios Andreas

In Logga, in the seaside location "Agios Andreas", there is a church of the same name which is one of the most important Byzantine monuments in the area. In its initial phase, which dates back to the early Middle Byzantine period (9th-10th century), the temple belonged to the three-aisled basilica type. A little later, during the 10th - 11th century, it was converted into a domed temple, one of the largest in the Peloponnese.

In its most recent history, the monument has undergone many arbitrary works that altered its internal and external form. The temple is located near the sanctuary of Apollo Korythos, where the earliest research showed the existence of an early Christian basilica. During the middle Byzantine period, the existence of an organized settlement in the current village of Logga, at the foot of Mount Lykodimos, is suspected.

This view is reinforced by the presence of a church from the same period, dedicated to Agios Antonios, just outside the village. In a document of the Venetian Senate of 1357, the river Loggas is mentioned as the border of the Venetian-occupied area of Koroni.
